Degree Program

Graphic Communications Associate in Applied Science (0140)

At Southwestern Illinois College, students can earn an Associate in Applied Science degree in Graphic Communications with an emphasis in Web Design or Marketing. Students can also earn certificates in graphic design and/or web design.


The Web Design program provides students with the basics of website design. Graphics, animation, cascading style sheets, typography, navigation, JavaScript, accessibility, and usability are emphasized throughout the degree courses. Students will design websites using a variety of techniques and software applications.


The Marketing program provides students with the basics of web-based marketing. Video production, social media management, search engine optimization, entrepreneurship, and small businesses are emphasized throughout the degree courses. Students will create videos and learn web-based marketing using a variety of techniques and software applications.

Accelerated Degree Option

Anyone who has completed an associate or bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college may earn an Associate in Applied Science degree in the Graphic Communications program by completing at least 27 semester credits of program related course work. A plan of specific courses required for the degree must be obtained from the program coordinator and approved by the dean of the Business Division and vice president for Instruction. Only those courses completed at SWIC, and not included as part of the requirements for a previously earned degree or certificate, can be considered for this option. Students must meet all institutional requirements for the AAS degree.

Certificate Program

Graphics Design Certificate (074A)

Students will learn the essentials of graphic design and publishing. Students will learn how to design all types of graphics and prepare them for print or web applications. Key graphics publishing software will be used to design and create a variety of publications.

Web Design Certificate (011E)

Students completing the Web Design Certificate will learn software and design principles required to construct websites. Emphasis will be given to graphics, colors, tiles, navigation bars, alignment, composition, web typography, and use of HTML editors.
